Since 1973 World Environment Day has been a great opportunity to come together and find new ways to protect the Earth, acting as a global platform for inspiring positive change.

Today, as we celebrate World Environment Day, we want to praise all the great works that are being done within the timber industry to encourage low-carbon construction using the best natural materials, and here at W.Howard we’re no different!

We’ve been committed to playing our part in helping the environment for many years and are always looking for new ways to lower our own carbon footprint, as well as improving the sustainable credentials of our manufacturing processes.

All our MDF and real wood veneers are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and because we use nothing but high-quality, defect-free MDF in all our products, we can also help our customers reduce waste on site.

We’re proud to hold the ISO14001 environmental management system, and all our products are manufactured to quality assurance standard ISO9001. We also hold the ISO45001 standard for Occupational Health and Safety and are committed to achieving ISO50001 for our Energy Management System. Plus, we have Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) certification, which is why we’re able to deliver into central London.

And that’s not all. We’re continuing to explore new ways in which we can improve our carbon footprint, including targeted metering, bio-LPG options and System Energy Management Solutions, as well as getting involved with a Demand Flexibility Service. To bring Kildare in line with our Manchester and Powys sites, we are currently working on a project to install Solar PV panels on the main factory roof, as well as 400kW Inverters and all necessary switch gear. We expect that the system’s annual production will be 366MWh, with 307MWh delivered on site.
